Posted in 334079 by Jim on November 4, 2009

Is Markham Airport expanding? Are there going to be more and longer runways? How much more air traffic can the residents of Stouffville expect to see and hear over the coming years? What impact will this have on Buttonville and the future Pickering Airport? Come and hear what those closest to these events have to say and bring your own questions and concerns to our Town Hall meeting Wednesday, November 4 @ 19 on the Park, 7 p.m.

Panelists include Mr Paul Calandra, MP for Oakridges, Mr Allan Rubin of Wings of Flight and Mr. Michael Robertson, an active member of Land Over Landings. Mr Mark Holland, MP for Ajax-Pickering has provided us with a recorded presentation that will be heard at the beginning of the meeting. Residents are invited to attend the open floor discussion. The show will be aired live.

Tune in August 25 for a very special edition of Soul Asylum

Posted in 334079 by Jim on August 24, 2009

Ken Cowle, producer and host of the show writes:

Tuesday August 24 @ 9:00pm, be sure to tune in to The Asylum for Your Soul Show for an exclusive interview with Freddy Will, author of My Book of Chrymes.

Cast into the streets of West Africa and the United States of America, Freddy Will talks about his hustle and how he got trained in phlebotomy. In Africa, he found solace in reggae playing ghetto slums where his involvement in music drew lifelong friendships that were nurtured from the most unexpected places. While living in Freetown, Sierra Leone his parents who were living in New Jersey, USA made a radical intervention that spared him from the wrath of the latter vendettas of the genocidal civil war but not before him was exposed to guns, drugs and violence.

Freddy Will’s refugee experiences that started in Sierra Leone, continued throughout places like the tropical paradise of The Gambia and Dakar, Senegal and only ended with a long awaited reunion in New Jersey where racism would mimic tribalism. Turning to the streets of New Jersey taught him new lessons. Freddy Will wrote lyrics with a dream that seemed unattainable, until a chance encounter in Canada changed everything…

Also featured will be an interview with 5 time Grammy winner Carvin Winan of The Winans. Their first record, Introducing The Winans was produced in 1981. They appeared in This is America, Charlie Brown’s segment “The Building of the Transcontinental Railroad” on February 10, 1989. Their style was noted for its crossover efforts and received airplay on R&B radio.

Carvin will talk about working with Freddy on his new single “Providence” which we will air! Also Carvin will talk about his strong faith in God, his wonderful background as a singer, and the many amazing artists he has been blessed to work with and much more!

Also, we have poet and artist Robin Gibson in the studio with us, to talk about her upcoming book, and to help host the show and read some poetry!

As if this weren’t enough, you’ll hear more poetry from Cedrick, Raymond Anderson, Joree Williams, Kassandra, David Turns, Leokadia Durmaj, speedy9237, Marie Calhoun, P.F.Kosak, Gurly Gurl, Pamibear, and Valerie Elerby and music by The Wyrd Sisters, Emberlasting, The Winans, Elen Lerner, Freddy Will, Calling Out Closer, Rebecca Stevens, and Julia Othmer.

The Asylum for your Soul Show airs Tuesdays @ 9:00pm-11:00pm, and repeats Sunday morning (Saturday late night) @ 1:00-3:00am. Only on your community station, WhiStle Radio.

The Stouffville Sun wrote a great article about Verity, his Dylan influences, Verity’s rock band years and the journey back to folk & roots. Read the article at http://www.stouffvillesun.com/News/Whitchurch-Stouffville/article/93934

Tickets are $10. The show starts at 8:00pm, and the venue is 19 on the Park. Tickets are available at the box office in person or by calling (905) 640-2322, Barthau Jewellers, Candlelight and Memories, Cedar Beach Grill, and 410 Auto.

The WhiStle Radio House Concert Series is inspired by The Greenbank Folk Music Society. The Greenbank Folk Music Society is a volunteer, non-profit group that has been dedicated to bringing the best Canadian roots and traditional folk and blues music to small town Ontario since 1993.
